It is based on the original M1911 design by John Browning, and has been the standard-issue side arm for the Force Recon Element of the United States Marine Corps' Marine Expeditionary Units since 1985.

The launcher can also be mounted onto a C7, a Canadian version of the M16 rifle, however, this requires the prior removal of the bottom handguard.

RM-70 Multiple Rocket Launcher System (raketomet vzor 1970) is a Czechoslovakian army version and the heavier variant of the BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher system, providing enhanced performance over its parent area-saturation artillery system that was introduced in 1971. RM-70 replaced the Ural-375D 6x6 track by a TATRA 813 8x8 truck as carrier platform for the 40 rocket tubes launcher. The new carrier vehicle provides enough space for carrying 40 additional 122mm rockets pack for reload. Nevertheless, RM-70 performance remains near the same as Grad even in terms of vehicle's speed and range.

The vessels' appearance has been compared to that of the historic ironclad warship.

The IAR (Infantry Automatic Rifle) program was originally initiated by US Marine Corps in an apparent intent to replace aging M249 SAW light machine guns in their "automatic rifle" (squad automatic) role. USMC sought lighter and more maneuverable weapon, still capable of at least some sustained firepower. The Marine Corps is planning to purchase 4,476 IARs to replace 2,000 M249 light machine guns currently employed by automatic riflemen within Infantry and Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalions.
